September is National Preparedness Month!

Multnomah County Emergency Management has joined thousands of other organizations in this year's Ready Campaign to encourage Americans to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses and communities.  

Do you have an emergency kit?

You may need to survive on your own after an emergency.  Local officials and relief workers will be on the scene after a disaster, but they cannot reach everyone immediately.  In addition, basic services such as electricity, gas, water, sewage treatment and telephones may be cut off for a week or longer.  Here is some helpful information about what you need and how to put together an emergency kit:

  • Thursday, September 9:  12:00-1:00 pm. Map Your Neighborhood Brown bag presentation at the Midland Library, 805 Southeast 122nd Avenue, Portland, OR 97233.
  • Thursday, September 16:  12:00-1:00 pm.  Animals in Disasters Brown bag presentation at the Capitol Hill Library, 10723 SW Capitol Highway, Portland, OR 97219
  • Thursday, September 23:  12:00-1:00 pm.  Beyond 3 Days Brown bag presentation at the St. John's Library, 7510 N. Charleston Ave, Portland, OR 97203.
  • Friday, September 24: 12:00-1:00 pm.  James Roddey, Earth Sciences Information Officer with the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI), will give a brown bag presentation on preparedness in the Multnomah Building room 100 (Commissioners Board Room)
  • Thursday, September 30: 12:00-1:00 PM Culturally Specific Communications and Diverse Populations in an Emergency Brown bag presentation in the Multnomah Building Oak Room (4th floor room 430), 501 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland, OR 97214
