Previously Homeless Families Find Homes, Now Seek Employment

Responding to the local housing crisis for families, Multnomah County’s Board of County Commissioners approved funding in January for immediate rent assistance for 30 families to be housed in 30 days. The effort, a partnership with non-profit organizations Human Solutions and JOIN, successfully housed 34 families who were homeless. Now, these families are seeking employment.
Money, representation at stake when Census hits the streets

Marc Jolin, the executive director of the outreach agency JOIN, chairs the sub-committee of the Complete Count Committee focusing on increased outreach to homeless people during the Census. He describes the effort being made to count homeless people as a “significant” one.

Census forms will be mailed to all households in two weeks. Those who do not have a permanent address can pick up forms at locations like libraries and parks and recreation centers. Complete your form and mail it back as soon as you can!

Robert and Tina Shanks know the difference 30 days can make. Thirty days ago, they got to move off the rigid, Army-green cots of Multnomah County's emergency warming center into their own apartment. Thirty days ago, they gave their daughter her own room in time for her to celebrate her 14th birthday.
County program to place homeless families exceeds goal

Multnomah County Commissioner Deborah Kafoury today announced that a program designed to house 30 homeless families in 30 days had exceeded its goal.
