Epidemiologist Series Positions in this series perform investigative and analytical epidemiologic activities related to surveillance, detection, and prevention of diseases and injuries.

Job description

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Develop and conduct outbreak and other epidemiologic investigations; use scientific and technical methods and practices to identify and evaluate health conditions; interview patients, health care providers, and others; perform onsite review of facilities and procedures; identify corrective actions and programs.
  • Perform statistical analyses on health problems; collect, analyze, report, and disseminate disease or health outcome data.
  • Assist in the design and management of surveillance systems; monitor surveillance data quality; recommend changes to improve or enhance data quality; report key findings.
  • Provide technical assistance and scientific consultation to private and nonprofit health and health-related state and local agencies and organizations and the general public; prepare and deliver analysis, reports, presentations, and scientific advice.
  • In addition to the above duties, the senior level will: perform advanced descriptive and comprehensive statistical analyses involving highly specialized scientific data; adapt or combine statistical methods to complete projects; design and manipulate databases; collaborate with scientists in the design of complex surveys and investigation processes, including methodological techniques and processes, and designing questionnaires and other data-collection instruments; provide technical consultative services for large and difficult public health programs and projects; write grants proposals for federal and other funding sources.

Epidemiologist

  • Journey level
  • Professional
  • Perform the full range of duties, working independently, applying well-developed subject knowledge, and exercising judgment and initiative.
  • Receive occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise.
  • Fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit.
  • Work is reviewed based on compliance, appropriateness, and effectiveness in meeting goals and deadlines.
  • Receive direction from manager or staff.

Epidemiologist Senior

  • Advanced level
  • Professional
  • Perform the most difficult assignments requiring a higher level of responsibility, applying advanced subject knowledge, and exercising significant independent judgment and initiative.
  • Receive work assignments in terms of objectives, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Work is reviewed for technical accuracy, compliance to program objectives, and overall results.
  • Receive direction from manager or staff.               
  • May exercise functional and technical supervision over staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. Requirements are determined at the time of recruitment based on responsibilities of the individual position and business needs of the department.

Epidemiologist

Training and experience for journey level, professional classifications are typically equivalent to a bachelor's degree and one (1) to four (4) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. (Equivalency 5-8 years of qualifying training and/or experience).

Epidemiologist Senior

Training and experience for this advanced level, professional classification is typically equivalent to a master's degree and three (3) to six (6) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. (Equivalency 9-12 years of qualifying training and/or experience).

Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check, have a valid driver license, and/or additional training, licenses, or certificates.
