CHUCK MOFFIT

OCCUPATION: Retired

OCCUPATIONAL BACKGROUND: US Army, 1971-1984; City of Portland, 1985-2008

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND: Beaverton High School, Diploma; St. Martin's College, BA in Accounting

PRIOR GOVERNMENTAL EXPERIENCE: None

I have spent my entire adult life in public service. As a native Oregonian, I graduated as a National Merit Scholar from Beaverton High School. I received my Bachelors Degree in Accounting from St Martins College. I raised three young women. One is an elementary teacher in Dundee. My other daughters are working: one in a family business and one at Safeway. I am happily married to Robin Mariani, a retired 911 dispatcher.

I enlisted in the Army in 1971 and served for nearly 13 years. The last five years were spent as an instructor at Fort Lewis. After 22 years with the City of Portland as an accountant, I retired in 2008.

I have been an active leader with AFSCME Local 189 serving from steward to President. I served as Treasurer of the state Council for eight years taking charge of a multi million dollar budget and managing the budgeting process for over 23,000 members and staff. I have performed and been the subject of positive audits, being held to the highest levels of accountability for both my work and my union activities. I have been endorsed by AFSCME.

I have an unwavering commitment to education and the services provided by MESD. My life experiences have solidified my belief that the special programs provided for students who learn in an alternative way are critical. There will always be a need for the programs and services only MESD can efficiently and economically provide.

Taxpayers are faced with some of the most challenging economic conditions in our lifetime. As public services struggle with needed funding the MESD will need strong experienced advocates on their board. My experiences as an accountant for the City of Portland and as a Union activist make me uniquely qualified to fill this position.
