Portland Public Schools remains strong and many of our children receive a world class education that prepares them for future success in higher education and work. I am committed to ensuring that our school system remains a source of hope and a path to achievement for all of our children.

Five principles will guide my work on the School Board:

  • Educational Equity: Educational equity is the civil rights cause of the 21st century and I am committed to ensuring that all of our children get a chance in life.
  • Education for the Whole Child: Children have a need and a right to develop their full potential. I will be a tireless advocate for the kind of broad education that all children deserve. Education that values and develops multiple intelligences, is informed by scientific research, and uses the power of the arts to propel student achievement.
  • Education for the 21st Century: Our goal should be to develop students' potential by promoting flexibility, creativity, independence, entrepreneurialism, positive risk-taking, and self-knowledge as much as basic skills. I will support high quality career technical education, community partnerships for career connections, and real access to advanced academic courses.
  • Fiscal Responsibility and Good Governance: As we cope with economic crisis, we need to ensure that our budget reflects our values of equity, fiscal conservatism, deliberate decision making, transparency, and above all, quality education for all our children.
  • Commitment to the Common Good: Our future as a city and a state depends in large part on how we treat our children. We must reverse a generation of disinvestment in education and work to ensure adequate, stable funding for our community's future.
