From the Archives: Multnomah County Medical Examiner identifies one suspected heat death during 100-degree Sunday

The Multnomah County Medical Examiner’s Program on Monday, Aug. 8 reported one person is suspected to have died of hyperthermia Sunday, Aug. 7 in Portland, where temperatures reached 100 degrees. No other details are being released at this time.

Seven people are suspected to have died of hyperthermia during a weeklong heatwave that ended Sunday, July 31. It was the longest stretch of extreme heat ever recorded in the Portland area.

These cases remain under investigation as potential heat-related deaths. Further tests and investigation will determine whether they are officially heat-related. The County will update this information as it becomes available.
