Public Library Careers

Multnomah County Library is a premier library system and Oregon's largest public library, serving nearly one-fifth of the state's population. The work environment encourages creativity, provides challenges, and allows individuals to realize their potential in a team atmosphere. Together, we help our community flourish.

"This work matters to me because I provide resources and lifelong learning opportunities to community members of all ages, income and ethnic backgrounds."

Anne T., Librarian

Some of our positions:

Librarian

As reference services experts, our Librarians’ first and foremost responsibility is connecting library patrons with the information they are looking for.

Librarians hold a leadership role within the Multnomah County Library system, typically providing training and supervision to other library staff members. Additional duties may include cataloging and classifying library material; developing unique collections of material for readers to explore; maintaining the library’s online catalog; and implementing activities to engage library patrons of various ages, socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.

Library Assistant

Library Assistants are responsible for providing library patrons with an excellent customer service experience. Whether it’s on the phone, in-person, over email, via chat or on social media, Library Assistants work to connect library patrons to the information they need. Some library assistant positions may have a program-specific focus that targets library goers of a specific age or community group.

Library Clerk

Library Clerks primarily provide support to library visitors and library staff through the use of digitized systems. Responsibilities may include:

  • Helping patrons manage their library accounts
  • Accepting payment for overdue materials
  • Teaching patrons how to check out material using automated stations
  • Entering and maintaining catalog records
  • Helping patrons download e-books and other digitized library material

Access Services Assistant

Access Services Assistants sort and shelve library material, including books, DVDs, CDs and periodicals at each Multnomah County Library location. These employees also help library visitors find material and use library computers, microfilm and other equipment.

Library Outreach Specialist

Library Outreach Specialists develop and implement programs tailored to reach a specific segment of the community. These library-based programs may be geared toward parents of young children, toddlers and preschoolers, low-income individuals and families, and people experiencing homelessness.
