Board vacates Commissioner Deborah Kafoury's seat, sets candidate filing deadlines for May 2014 election

Multnomah County’s Board of Commissioners declared a vacancy in District 1 on Thursday after after Commissioner Deborah Kafoury announced she was stepping down to run for County Chair in the May 2014 election.

Commissioner Kafoury’s last day on the board is Friday, Oct. 18. Kafoury has designated Liesl Wendt, a state human services manager, to fill the District 1 seat Multnomah County Commission Districts - 2011 (218.55 KB) until May when an election will determine who will fill the remainder of her four-year term ending on Dec. 31, 2016.

The board voted 4-0 to declare the vacancy and set the candidate filing deadlines. Kafoury excused herself from the vote, citing a conflict of interest.

Candidates for the District 1 seat can begin filing with the Multnomah County Elections Office on Monday, Oct. 21. Filing continues until March 11, 2014.

The election for the District 1 seat is May 20, 2014.
