Multnomah County intern De'Ontria McFerson didn't expect anything.
The Parkrose High School senior was at a Jan. 11 assembly when Commissioner Loretta Smith and Rep. Earl Blumenauer (via video) appeared unexpectedly and invited her to attend President Obama's second innauguration.
Smith first met McFerson as an intern involved with the Summer Youth Connect program, which gave 50 low-income and at-risk students a chance to work at Multnomah County in summer 2012. Her hard work and dedication stuck out.
"I've never had somebody pay this much attention to me," McFerson told reporters.
McFerson's expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. involves a visit to Blumenauer's office and tickets to the inauguration and an inaugural ball.
