Multnomah County Elections can support you in making a plan to VOTE this May!

The next election in Multnomah County is the May 21, 2024 Primary Election. This election includes candidate contests for Multnomah County Board of Commissioners, Metro Council, and federal, state and judicial candidate positions, as well as ballot measures.

Reminder: Candidate contests for the City of Portland elected offices will not appear on the May 2024 ballot. These contests will appear on the Nov. 5, 2024 ballot, which will also be the City's first use of ranked choice voting. To learn more about ranked choice voting in upcoming City of Portland elections, visit www.portland.gov/vote.

All registered voters in Multnomah County will receive a ballot for this election. Ballots will be mailed out starting Wednesday, May 1, 2024.

Support is available for any step of the voting process, including signing up to vote, marking or reading the ballot, updating voter registration information, and understanding election rules and steps in voting. If you are a voter who needs assistance, you can go online, call the Elections Office at 503-988-8683, send an email to elections@multco.us, or visit a Multnomah County Elections location.

Assistance available for voters with disabilities

Voters with disabilities can request voting assistance from a friend, family member, or someone else they know and trust. If needed, voters can request election-related assistance from Multnomah County Elections. Elections’ Voter Assistance Teams can assist a voter in their home, at the facility they live in, or at an elections service location in Southeast Portland or Gresham (be sure to check operating hours). This support is always free. Employers or union representatives are legally prohibited from providing voter assistance.

Independent Voting Units allow all residents to vote privately and independently

As a voter, you can also choose to vote using our Independent Voting Unit (IVU), which allows you to vote privately and independently. IVUs are available at both the Multnomah County Duniway-Lovejoy Elections Building in Portland and at the Voting Center Express in Gresham, which will be open April 25 through May 21, 2024.

An IVU is a tablet system that allows you to use adaptive technology to cast your ballot. It includes a headset to adjust the volume and speed of the audio reading the ballot. The touchscreen has adjustable font sizes and three contrasting color-sets, or it can be turned off completely. You can use the touchscreen or a controller that can be held in your lap and has markings in English and braille. You can vote while seated in a chair, while using a mobility device, or while standing using an adjustable table. If you have any questions, you can use the call button to get an election worker's attention.

After marking and reviewing your choices, you’ll print the ballot, sign the ballot return envelope and then put the ballot into your return envelope.

Independent Voting Units are available for voting until 8 p.m. on Election Night, May 21, 2024. To vote and mark your ballot on an IVU, visit one of our two voting service locations. Any voter can use an IVU to vote independently.

Election support is also available in a voter’s preferred language

You can also request voting assistance in your preferred language. Multnomah County Elections has multilingual staff available and can also provide an interpreter, free of charge, to anyone who needs assistance in voting or elections processes in a language other than English. Telephone or video interpretation is available in any language, including American Sign Language.
