Notice of Election: Candidate Filing is open for the May 16, 2023 Special District Election

The next election in Multnomah County is the May 16, 2023 Special District Election. This election includes contests for positions on the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners, local school boards, community colleges, Multnomah County Education Service District, and rural fire districts and water districts, as well as local ballot measures.

The candidate filing deadline for Multnomah County Commissioner, District 3, is Tuesday, March 7. District 3 represents residents living south of Interstate 84 to the Clackamas County line, between SE Cesar Chavez and roughly 148th. The deadline for all other Special District Election candidates is Thursday, March 16, 2023. If you are interested in running for office, you can find more information online at multnomahvotes.gov. Ballots will be mailed to all registered Multnomah County voters beginning on Wednesday, April 26, 2023. It is important to make sure you are registered to vote and keep your registration updated so that you can receive your ballot as soon as possible. The voter registration deadline for the May 16, 2023 Special District Election is Tuesday, April 25, 2023.

In advance of the May 16, 2023 Special District Election, Multnomah County Elections is asking voters to Make a Plan to VOTE! The action-focused checklist walks voters through the five steps needed to ensure their vote is counted:

  • Return your ballot.

Register to VOTE

The voter registration deadline for this election is Tuesday, April 25, 2023. Register to vote online at oregonvotes.gov/register. Make sure you update your voter registration anytime you move, change your name or want to change your party affiliation. 

Don’t wait to check that your voter registration has your current residence and mailing address. After you check your registration, be sure to sign up for the free Track Your Ballot service!

Get your ballot.

Ballots will be mailed to voters beginning on Wednesday, April 26, 2023. If you are going to be away from home for this election, you can sign up to get an absentee ballot, available starting Monday, April 3, 2023.

VOTE your ballot

Remember to sign your ballot return envelope. Your signature is your identification. Every signature on every ballot is examined to make sure it matches the signature on the voter’s registration. If you forget to sign or your signature does not match, Multnomah County Elections will send you a letter so that you can take action and we can count your vote. You will also be contacted through the Track Your Ballot service if you signed up for it.

Return your ballot

You have two choices for returning your ballot. The first method is to vote early and return your ballot by mail — no stamp needed! Ballots must be mailed and postmarked by Tuesday, May 16, to be counted.

The second is to return your ballot to an Official Ballot Drop Site. You can return your ballot to any 24-hour Official Ballot Drop Box in the state or to any 24-hour Multnomah County Library Drop Site by 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 16. 

Please note that as Multnomah County libraries undergo construction, some Library Drop Sites and Official Ballot Drop Site locations may change. Check multnomahvotes.gov for the latest information. Official Ballot Drop Sites will also be listed in the Voters' Pamphlet.
