Inclusively Leading With Race (ILWR)

The big question / How might we...?

Can we develop a clear organization-wide communication that supports and deepens our employees’ understanding of the County’s intersectional approach to workforce equity, also known as “Leading with Race?”

Type (project or consultation):

Project

When:

2019 - 2021

Process/what we did:

This question was brought to the MIL by then-Chair Deborah Kafoury’s Chief of Staff and the County’s Chief Equity Officer.

Over the course of two years, interrupted by the pandemic, an incredible group of over 50 County employees, representing every department and Employee Resource Group (ERG), participated in a design process to define what Inclusively Leading with Race is, what it looks like when the County does lead with race, and offer recommendations for further action. The work culminated in an open letter, inspired by other historical calls to action, from the Design Team to the entire County, including leadership.

Outcome/Impact:

The results of this work were presented to and adopted by the Board of County Commissioners on March 30, 2021.

In 2023 Office of Diversity and Equity (ODE) re-engaged with the WESP and ILWR, actively working with the created materials, and some of the original Design Team members to create next steps for WESP 2.0.
