Accessing Documents and Purchasing Copies of Recorded Documents

Available Documents can be researched:

1.  Can I look at these records online? (Temporarily Unavailable)

Yes.  You can view the document information (type, document number, recording date, party type, parties’ names, legal description,etc.) through our Digital Research Room. The actual document image is not shown, but is available for purchase through the Digital Research Room.  A convenience charge of 2.35% applies for credit card orders.  Debit card orders incur a flat fee of $3.50.

  • Uncertified copies of recorded documents can be downloaded immediately for use.
  • Certified copy requests will be processed and mailed out within 5 business days.

Document images are available for use free of charge by making an appointment and coming in to the Multnomah Building.

2.  Can I mail in a request for documents?

Yes.  Fill out a  Recorded Document Request Form (128.88 KB) and mail it to:

You will need to provide:
  • document type
  • document number (or book and page) - if not known, additional information may be required
  • year of recording.
  • full name on document

Fees for mailing in a request are:

  • Standard Copies: $4 for the first page, 25 cents for each extra page (per document).
  • Certified Copies: $7.75 for the first page, 25 cents for each extra page (per document).

For mailed orders, we accept checks and certified funds (money order or cashier's check).

  • Make checks payable to Multnomah County Recorder
  • All funds must be in US dollars.

3.  Can I come in and look at your records?

  1. Research time is limited to one hour per person per day.
  2. Before scheduling your appointment, please contact our office and confirm that the records you need are available.

Terminals in our Public Research area have the following documents:

  • Recorded Documents (1955 - Current)
  • Deed Index (1855 - Current)
  • Marriage Index (1924-1979)
Fees for printing from the public terminals are:
  • Standard Copies: 25 cents per page.
  • Certified Copies: $4 for the first page, 25 cents for each extra page (per document).

We accept cash, checks, debit and credit cards (fees apply) and certified funds (money order or cashier’s check).

What if the document I want isn’t available online?

If the document you want is not online, bring your  Recorded Document Request Form (128.88 KB) to our counter.

How do I get a copy of my military discharge (DD-214)?

If you recorded your military discharge form (DD-214) with Multnomah County, mail us a completed, notorized request form.

All DD-214's can be requested through the National Archives.


Can I get lien information over the phone?

No. You can search the lien index online through our Digital Research Room.

What tax records are available for my property?

Tax Bills (Copies of actual tax statements) 1988 - Current
  • Tax Rolls (Certified tax, value and appraisal information) 1942 - 2010
  • Characteristic Cards (Full appraisal information and values) 1991 - Current
  • Block Books (Name of Owner and Value of property) 1907 - 1942

Are these tax records online?

Some. You can find recent property information by visiting Multnomah County’s property tax website. The website contains recent property values, property characteristics and copies of current fall tax bills. Click on the Guest Login button and enter a property tax account number or the property address.

How do I get older information?

Either mail or email a Recorded Document Request Form:

After we receive your request, we will determine how long it will take to complete the work and any fees that are associated.  We charge $60 per hour for any requests taking more than 15 minutes. We charge the research fee in 15 minute increments, so a request taking a half hour would cost $30.

You must mail in a payment before we can complete your request. We are unable to take any payments online or over the phone.

We complete most requests within 5 business days. Some requests, depending on size and staffing levels, may take longer to complete.

Marriage records

We maintain all marriage licenses issued by Multnomah County, going to back to 1855.

How do I get a copy of a marriage license?

  • Order Online.  (Temporarily Unavailable)  You can download uncertified copies for free through our Digital Research Room.  Certified copies can also be ordered through the Digital Research Room and cost less than purchasing in person or through the mail.  Requests will be processed and mailed out within 1-2 business days
  • Mail in the Certified Copy Request Form. Once received, we process requests within 1-2 business days. Payments must be in US dollars.click button to schedule appointment

    • Please call and verify your license has been received before making an appointment.

    • The first copy costs $7.75.  Additional copies, ordered at the same time, cost $4.00 each.

You will need to make an appointment and come in to our office.

Our marriage index from 1924 to 1979 is available on terminals in our Public Research Area.

Requesting A Public Record

Under Oregon’s Public Records law (ORS 192), individuals, organizations, agencies, and businesses may request that Multnomah County provide copies or access to written documents and materials.  The request must:

  • Be in writing.
  • Include contact information.
  • Clearly state what records are sought.

Please be advised there may be a fee to cover staff time researching and retrieving the documents. You will be notified of any estimated fee and cost in advance.  Payment is required before the County will produce the records. The fee may be reduced or waived if it is determined it is in the interest of the public.
