100 Day Kick-off to End Veteran Homelessness

September 8, 2015

On Tuesday, Sept. 8, Multnomah County, the City of Portland and the many partners involved in the A Home for Every Veteran initiative will announce a final push to end Veteran homelessness in Portland and Multnomah County.

The 100 day kick-off will be hosted at The Erickson Fritz Apartments at 9 N.W. 2nd Ave in Old Town/Chinatown from noon to 1 p.m. City, county and regional leaders, including Multnomah County Chair Deborah Kafoury, Mayor Charlie Hales, Commissioner Dan Saltzman, HUD Regional Administrator Bill Block and Joanne Krumberger, director of Portland VA Health Care System will share the accomplishments and challenges ahead to ensure there are no Veterans sleeping on the streets and that every Veteran who becomes homeless will have access to permanent housing.

The kickoff coincides with a nationwide effort established by the White House in 2009 to end Veteran homelessness by the end of this year. If successful, Portland and Multnomah County will join the likes of other U.S. cities that have successfully ended Veteran homelessness including New Orleans, Houston, Phoenix and Salt Lake City.

Members of the local rental market community and business partners, who are critical to the success of housing our remaining homeless Veterans, will be honored at Tuesday’s event, including Home Forward, IPM (Income Property Management), BedMart, Princeton Property Management, Cascade Management & PCRI (Portland Community Reinvestment Initiatives).

The event precedes Portland’s Veteran Stand Down on Friday, September 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The Stand Down is a venue for Veterans to receive much needed services including housing and employment resources, medical services, haircuts, clothing and more.
