We don’t take kindly to threats or bullies

Commissioner Loretta Smith, who represents north Portland on the Multnomah County Board, asked for a moment to comment during the Jan. 26 board meeting.

She was reacting to President Donald Trump’s executive order, which threatens to pull federal funding from local governments such as Multnomah County that refuse to assist the Department of Homeland Security in enforcing federal immigration law. Trump’s move also orders the construction of a “wall” along the U.S. border with Mexico.

“We will not let him expel our neighbors and our friends. We don’t take kindly to threats or bullies.since taking office six years ago I have worked with amazing colleagues to protect the most vulnerable in our community,” she said.

“To those of you who know me, you know I don’t respond well to threats. So to those who worry that your immigration status means you can no longer access services, or get help you need. I’ve got your back. We the commissioners and our staff, we’ve got your back,” she said. “We don’t back down from what’s right. We won’t be pushed into a corner. We have always stood up for the vulnerable in this county. We will stand up today. And we will stand up tomorrow.”
