Baby Bonds!

The big question / How might we...?

How might DCHS create racially just economic opportunities for every person, particularly those who have been disadvantaged by the governmental practice of white supremacy, to thrive?

Type (project or consultation):

Project

When:

May 2015 to present

Process/what we did:

The concept behind implementing a Baby Bonds! project is to create racially just economic opportunities by providing a graduated trust account to eligible children. The trust will be designed to provide the forecasted average wealth position to each recipient by the time the trust fund occurs.

As of early 2023, the MIL has continued to develop the foundations of this project through extensive research. Primary research includes examining articles on the concept and developing a literature review. The MIL has also interviewed the author of the original baby bonds concept, spoken with potential funders, and engaged in local data analysis to model the concept for Multnomah County.

Outcome/Impact:

This effort is in progress and we look forward to the impact. Though there will likely be near-term benefits associated with hope, the primary economic impacts will benefit the next generation.
