County employee experiences reaction following COVID-19 vaccination

January 11, 2021

A healthcare provider for Multnomah County experienced a reaction to the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine Monday, requiring treatment and further observation. By evening they were home resting and doing well. All vaccinations are conducted under medical supervision and protocol calls for monitoring each individual for at least 15 minutes following vaccination to identity reactions.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that in rare cases—about .2 percent—people have experienced severe reactions to the COVID-19 vaccine requiring they be treated with additional medical services.

So far in Oregon, more than 100,000 people have received a COVID-19 vaccine. Health care professionals are required to report certain adverse events while vaccine manufacturers are required to report all adverse events to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, which the CDC co-manages with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
