Video: Join Chair Cogen for a behind-the-scenes look at Multnomah County’s Elections Division

In this second installment of  “Know Multnomah County,” a video series aimed at spreading the word about the important services county employees provide each day to our 735,000 residents, follow Chair Jeff Cogen as he tours the county’s Elections Division in Southeast Portland with Julie Bates, a senior program specialist.

County Elections is responsible for conducting all local, city, county, state and federal elections for the citizens of Multnomah County. Conducting these elections involves:

  • Registering voters
  • Maintaining the voter database
  • Maintaining address and district data
  • Checking signatures on city, local and state candidate/initiative petitions
  • Accepting candidate/measure filings 
  • Producing voters' pamphlets
  • Issuing and mailing ballots
  • Establishing drop site locations
  • Accepting and processing returned ballots
  • Counting ballots
  • Releasing results
