Database Administrator Series Positions in this series analyze, design, develop, install, maintain, and troubleshoot county databases and master files.

Job description

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Develop large-scale databases and data warehousing; perform database architecture and develop technical standards for large-scale databases (i.e. SQL Server, Oracle, DB2), data warehousing, and data analytics platforms on countywide or multi-department platforms, both on-prem and in the cloud.
  • Troubleshoot data-tier problems and provide technical assistance to developers and database users.
  • Provide project management and work with other departments or outside agencies to integrate data from multiple database platforms and data providers.
  • Monitor performance, identity bottlenecks and recommend and implement automated adjustments to optimize performance.
  • Formulate scope and objectives for database projects; define outcomes; develop and recommend solutions; problem solve and build consensus with management, customers, and vendors to negotiate project priorities and outcomes.
  • Maintain integrity and security of databases; coordinate and perform database software installations, upgrades, and patches.
  • Design, implement, and schedule physical and logical database backups; plan and perform database restoration and recovery.
  • Develop database scripts and triggers; migrate data between database environments (development, testing, and production).
  • Monitor, adjust, and optimize space utilization and database performance.
  • In addition to the above duties, the senior level will: act as an expert in database architecture and technical standards for large-scale databases, GIS, and data warehousing; support Active Directory, Security and Networking configuration, and troubleshooting; and provide guidance to Database Administrators
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Perform the full range of duties, working independently, applying well-developed subject knowledge, and exercising judgment and initiative.
  • Receive occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise.
  • Fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit.
  • Work is reviewed based on compliance, appropriateness, and effectiveness in meeting goals and deadlines.
  • Receive direction from manager or staff.

Database Administrator Senior

  • Advanced level
  • Professional
  • Perform the most difficult assignments requiring a higher level of responsibility, applying advanced subject knowledge, and exercising significant independent judgment and initiative.
  • Receive work assignments in terms of objectives, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Work is reviewed for technical accuracy, compliance to program objectives, and overall results.
  • Receive direction from manager or staff.           

  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.  Requirements are determined at the time of recruitment based on responsibilities of the individual position and business needs of the department.

Database Administrator

Training and experience for journey level, professional classifications are typically equivalent to a bachelor's degree and one (1) to four (4) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.  (Equivalency 5-8 years of qualifying training and/or experience).

Database Administrator Senior

Training and experience for advanced level, professional classifications are typically equivalent to a bachelor's degree and three (3) to six (6) years of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.  (Equivalency 7-10 years of qualifying training and/or experience).

Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required to pass a criminal background check, have a valid driver license, and /or additional training, licenses, or certificates.
