Session One- Wage and Hour Issues for Adult Care Home Operators

Jeffrey Burgess with Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries (Oregon BOLI) will discuss the top wage and hour issues for adult care homes, including whether to classify a worker as an employee or independent contractor, making sure that minimum wage and overtime are paid properly (unless there is an applicable exemption under state and federal law), required breaks and meal periods, correctly tracking time worked and what the permissible payroll deductions are. Many operators are so focused on providing excellent care to their residents that they neglect these important regulations and risk costly penalties and lawsuits.  There will be plenty of time for your questions. Join us for a lively, interactive discussion!.

Session Two- Effective Supervision of Adult Care Home Workers

Jeffrey Burgess with Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries (Oregon BOLI) will present how hiring the right employee and doing it properly gets the employment relationship off to a good start.  Is the worker authorized to work in the US? Have you clearly outlined job duties and expectations? If the employee fails to meet those expectations, are you on solid footing to discipline and terminate, if necessary?  As an employer, are you maintaining required documentation? Are you in compliance with the Workplace Fairness Act and Oregon’s pay equity law?  When is time off protected? This session focuses on the effective supervision of employees in adult care homes so that you can maintain your required business documentation, ensure a respectful work environment and minimize exposure to costly claims and lawsuits. There will be plenty of time for your questions! Please join us for this important, lively and interactive webinar.
